Vision Led Planning: how to plan development and transport infrastructure more sustainably

Greengauge 21 concentrates on integrated public transport, rail and high-speed rail in particular. This new report “Vision Led Planning: how to plan development and transport infrastructure more sustainably” is a joint initiative of the Centre for Transport and Society at the University of the West of England, Bristol; ITP; Jon Parker Consultancy; Transport for Quality of Life and other partners. Whilst our contribution was modest, the report points to our recent experience with identifying a suitable strategic alternative to Government’s cancelled major highway investment programme (A303/A358), Basingstoke – Taunton).

Greengauge 21 Director Jim Steer comments: “the transport planning world is intent on breaking a presumption that road traffic growth is inevitable and points instead towards the need for objective and vision-led planning for transport. Better public transport with the capacity to accommodate demand growth sustainably, with greater levels of safety, reliability and availability to all, should be DfT’s stated aim.”

“High-speed rail often gets criticised wrongly for being obsessive about faster journeys. But as Greengauge 21 has repeatedly pointed out, the objective of HS2 from the outset has been about providing additional national transport capacity. It is a part of the solution, in other words.”
